Call to Action Presentation 11Nov2019 V2
A recent study published by economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman of the University of California at Berkeley concluded that the 400 richest families in the U.S. paid a lower effective tax rate than the bottom 50% of taxpayers in the U.S.
While some economists are disputing some technicalities regarding calculations that might have a small impact on the result, the fact is that the effective tax rate paid by the richest Americans went down my more than half while the effective tax rate on the bottom 50% went up.
The super-rich saw the biggest tax cuts come during Ronald Reagan’s first term as president, Bill Clinton’s second term, and as a result of the tax legislation/reform passed in 2018. So this is not a partisan problem.
Among social benefits and services lost largely as a consequence of the tax cuts include education subsidies that kept tuitions at state colleges and universities very low until the mid-1980’s, and mental health facilities and care, which is considered to be one cause for the dramatic increase in homeless persons living on streets in major American cities.
It also points to a major issue with implementing a national health care or “medicare-for-all” system in the U.S. In addition to medical costs that are less than half of the U.S. per capita, effective tax rates in most industrialized countries, particularly on the wealthiest families and individuals, are 1.5 to 2 times higher than in the U.S.

I found this Associated Press release published in the Christian Science Monitor on Mary 14, 2014.
Note that Hunter believed that his “assistance in consulting the company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine”.
Note also the statement from Joe Biden’s spokesman that Biden has no involvement in young Biden’s activities.
It would seem to me that there was honorable intent, full transparency and nothing nepharious about this.
Hunter Biden, the younger son of Vice President Joe Biden, is joining the board of a gas company operating in Ukraine, the company announced Tuesday, as the West seeks to help Ukraine wean itself off its dependence on Russian energy.
Burisma Holdings said Biden, an attorney and chairman of the board of the World Food Program USA, will head the Burisma’s legal unit, and will also seek support for the company among international organizations.
“I believe that my assistance in consulting the company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine,”Biden said in a statement released by the company.
The announcement comes as Ukraine and the U.S. are looking to decrease Ukraine’s reliance on Russian energy amid threats from Moscow to cut Ukraine off if it doesn’t pay massive debts. Western countries believe Russia would have less leverage in the crisis with Ukraine if Europe was less dependent on Russian gas.
“Hunter Biden is a private citizen and a lawyer,” said Biden spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff. “The vice president does not endorse any particular company and has no involvement with this company.”
Still, Vice President Biden has spoken frequently about the need to increase Ukraine’s energy independence, including during a recent visit to Kiev. He’s also a key interlocutor for the Obama administration with Kiev and other anxious nations in the region as the crisis there has unfolded.
Fox loves to demonize San Francisco, painting it as this filthy, drug-ridden place so they can equate it with liberalism, and tie it directly to Nancy Pelosi because it is her district.
In fact, San Francisco ranks seventh in the nation in the number of homeless people behind New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC (yes, our nation’s capitol!) and three other cities.
New York has nearly twelve times as many homeless as San Francisco with nearly 80,000 homeless. New York City, Trump’s home town, where he is in the real estate business and could do something about it.
Portland Oregon, another Fox example of liberal policies gone awry does not even make the top ten.
Any homelessness is unfortunate and unacceptable. Weaponizing it for political purposes is despicable.

Today, August 14, every major news outlet in the country is carrying a headline story about the DJIA dropping 800 points – the largest single drop in a year – due to concerns of a pending economic slowdown.
Apparently if you are Fox News the optics of that story would not be particularly good for Donald Trump. So, instead, just don’t report it.
So what do you do to fill the void? Run yet another story about Hillary Clinton’s email server, of course. But that might not even be enough. For good measure include a story about another one of Fox’s favorite villains – Rep. Ilhan Omar!

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez’s decision to not have Fox news host any 2020 debates, followed by Howard Dean’s comments this morning on CNN’s Smerconish that true Trump supporters are too far gone for the Democratic party to pursue, suggesting that the Democratic party does not want true Trump supporters, are recipes for reelecting Trump in 2020. This attitude is as insensitive as Hillary’s “deplorables” comment that may have helped her to lose the 2016 presidential election.
Many Americans who truly felt they were no longer part of the American dream voted for Trump in 2016 because the political system in Washington had let them down. They included millions of Americans who lost their jobs and, consequently, their homes in a Great Recession that was caused in part by greedy financial institutions and fly-by-night mortgage lenders that were deregulated during Bill Clinton’s presidency. This caused an unprecedented housing bubble that burst violently.
Millions of our fellow Americans are still on the outside of a reasonably robust economy looking in. This does not make them all racists and misogynists.
This morning’s Fox News headline – Hillary’s emails! For maximum effect to distract Fox’s audience from the Congressional budget deal on the wall, include pictures of Anthony Weiner and James Comey. What could be more evil!
Not to diminish the importance of the other important headlines on Fox’s front page this morning – McDonalds adds donuts to its menu, and a WWF star discusses her sex tapes.

When Democratic presidential hopefuls and members of the Democratic caucus talk about a single payer health care or Medicare-for-All system, it suggests either a lack of understanding of the Medicare system, a talking point that is misleading or isn’t practical, or a fool-hearty plan that will, in fact, bankrupt the nation.
When certain Democrats further suggest abolishing the medical insurance industry I am convinced that they really don’t understand the Medicare system.
Rather, what we really should be seriously considering is “Medicare-A-for-All” health care legislation. With such a plan persons would… or could… still purchase supplemental Medicare plans from insurers that cover elective surgeries, doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, preventive services and prescription drugs. It is how Medicare works today for persons over 65 years of age.
Health care legislation can also address the cost of supplemental services, notably preventative services and prescription drugs without the Government subsidizing those products and services through a Medical-for-All system.
Instead of “Medicare-for-All” let’s think “A-for-All”. It is more correct and precise, and a more achievable goal to strive for.
For an explanation of basic Medicare-A and supplemental plans visit the Medicare web site – linked below.

All the news outlets this afternoon are reporting on the Senate’s rebuke of President Trump’s Syria and Afghanistan policy. All except one – Fox News. Fox not only chooses instead to run a headline that plays more to Trump’s base. There is not one mention of the Senate vote, which numerous Republicans backed and passed 68-23.
