Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez’s decision to not have Fox news host any 2020 debates, followed by Howard Dean’s comments this morning on CNN’s Smerconish that true Trump supporters are too far gone for the Democratic party to pursue, suggesting that the Democratic party does not want true Trump supporters, are recipes for reelecting Trump in 2020. This attitude is as insensitive as Hillary’s “deplorables” comment that may have helped her to lose the 2016 presidential election.
Many Americans who truly felt they were no longer part of the American dream voted for Trump in 2016 because the political system in Washington had let them down. They included millions of Americans who lost their jobs and, consequently, their homes in a Great Recession that was caused in part by greedy financial institutions and fly-by-night mortgage lenders that were deregulated during Bill Clinton’s presidency. This caused an unprecedented housing bubble that burst violently.
Millions of our fellow Americans are still on the outside of a reasonably robust economy looking in. This does not make them all racists and misogynists.
